Our Goals

The English Language Learning (ELL) paradigm has undergone complete modification in today’s scenario. The liberalization of the Indian economy has ushered in all kinds of reasons to learn the English Language. In this direction, the office of the Commissioner, Higher Education has undertaken a major project of establishing state-of-the-art Spoken English Language Laboratories across Gujarat. The nodal agency in this venture is   Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Open University.

The aim of these fully computerized, modern labs is to make students English proficient and therefore open up a whole new spectrum of job opportunities for the youth of the state. These labs are a quantum jump towards achieving Global Employability.

Benefits

Today, with the rapid expansion of service sector, job opportunities in the state have increased considerably. Call Centers need employees with effective communication skills; multinationals require marketing staff with fluent English, medical transcription centre, IT, mass media, insurance sector, retail management are all on the look-out for persons with reasonable English communication skills. The main thrust of these labs is functional English rather than literary English, hence the major gap between English proficiency and employability is proposed to be bridged.

What are Language Labs?

Language Labs offer a variety of functions such as recording, student monitoring, group conferencing in addition to teaching basic grammar and vocabulary the digital way. They also make use of visual aids for display of English movies, thus making learning fun and enjoyable and also teaching practical utilization of the language. These labs cater to the Qualified College teachers have been specially trained to teach in a neutral accent with provisions for British and American accents to aid students traveling abroad; who feel the need to be acquainted with respective accents.

Career Labs

A unique feature of these labs is a finishing school or career Lab where students are groomed to face interviews, taught proper body language, presentation skills, as well as etiquette.

Course and Certifications

Language Labs all over Gujarat follow a uniform syllabus which has been designed according to the requirements of students in Gujarat by an expert tern of ELT teachers.

Examinations are conducted by a team of expert examiners specially trained in the field of ELT. After successful completion, the student shall be awarded a certificate by Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Open University.

GUIDELINES OF THE PROJECT

The changing context of University education in the 21st Century makes it necessary to restructure the curriculum and to reorient the teachers who are responsible for curriculum transaction. In view of Globalization and the needs of 'Knowledge society', the teaching of English has to shift the focus from teaching of literature to teaching of Language and communication skills.

The Office of the Higher Education Commissioner, Govt. of Gujarat, Gandhinagar has adopted an innovative approach and decided to establish state-of-art, LAN based English Language Laboratory in about 58 colleges of the State in the first phase. The focus of the courses run in the English Language Laboratory will be on functional English (method and curriculum). This is a welcome development. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University is entrusted the responsibility to implement this project.

Syllabi of the courses to be offered by English Language Laboratory have been framed.

Eligibility Criteria :

Minimum qualification for the Foundation Course (Level I) is SSC (with or without English). Minimum qualification for Certificate Course (Level II) is HSC (with English) and those who have cleared Level I. Minimum qualification for Diploma Course (Level III) is Graduation.

Training :

H. M. Patel Institute of English and Research, Vallabh Vidyanagar (Anand) has been entrusted the task of training part of the programme. Other agencies like British Council will be roped in accordance with the requirements.

Evaluation :

The evaluation of Level-I will be done by the concerned college and send the result to Dr. BAOU whereas the evaluation at Level-II and Level-III, the common pool of evaluators/assessors trained by Dr. BAOU selected for the purpose shall conduct.

Training of evaluators/assessors for different level courses will be arranged accordingly in consultation with H. M. Patel Institute of English and Research.

Grading of the candidate wishing to join English courses would be determined by diagnostic test.

Certification :

Certification shall be done by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University.

For Level 1 no grade/credit would be awarded. Student would be declared Successfully Cleared (SC) or Not Cleared (NC).

General instructions :  

  • Every English Language Lab established by the grant of Commissioner Office through the BAOU would be called as Auxiliary Center. All English Language Lab established will accordingly be given recognition by the BAOU as auxiliary centers. For this the colleges will have to apply in given Performa and submit them to Co-coordinator of the project. A copy of Performa is enclosed.  

  • Application forms for candidates will be supplied by the office of the BAOU

  • The Concerned institutes are to maintain separate accounts of the labs by college accountants.

  • Registration fee, brochure/form fee, lab fee for language lab courses and examination fee should be charged. Examination fee would go to the BAOU

  • All additional human resource or expenditure for the same shall be managed by the college from the revenue earned by the college by different courses. The college can run more than one course in different shifts too depending on the subscription to courses.

Performance Appraisal of English Language Laboratory :

The Co-coordinator of the English Language Lab through the Principal of the concerned institution will submit a Quarterly Progress Report with a copy marked to the Office of Higher Education Commissioner, Gandhinagar. The Consultative Committee formed by the Commissioner, Higher Education would visit the laboratory as and when they deem fit.

Collaboration :

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University and Office of the Commissioner, Higher Education, Govt. of Gujarat have initiated discussion with British Council, Mumbai for collaboration in training, vetting of materials and ancillary aspects.
